1st Idealist(Singapore) Meeting- We’re Making History -
After a failed attempt at holding a meet on the 11th of February 2007, 3 determined individuals decided to meet outside the stipulated Idealist.org meeting period for the 151st Startup Meeting…. So, yes. Today, we met. From Left: Me, Sebastian and Mahesh It’s almost safe to say that the 3 of us are probably the first Idealist meeting pioneers here in Singapore! If I’m wrong, please let me know. At the time of writing, there are 15 Singapore based members. In any case, it was an evening spent on introductions as well as the addressing of the most important question… “What happens from here…?” For one, Sebastian works with an NGO Light For Children and he’s planning to get a few things running - To get people/organizations to adopt 10 Ghana children this year and also to get more asian volunteers over to Ghana. Each child only requires SGD$1000 for an entire year’s worth of expenses! Even the camera that was used to take that picture cost more than that! Another goal that he has is also to increase volunteer involvement in Ghana. Now, I know a lot of people who read this are probably undergraduates who have been to Cambodia or Thailand or Vietnam…but how many have gone beyond Asia and into Africa? So here’s what’s going to happen. Mahesh is going to work to get some kickass videos up so that we can use it to pitch to schools and organizations to them involved in Ghana. You'll also be able to see and spread the word. We’re hoping that volunteerism clubs will want to be involved and perhaps make a trip to Ghana under the programmes listed on Light For Children. Sebastian is hoping to send a team of about 10 Singaporeans up to Ghana sometime in May so if you’re interested do drop me a note to see how we can get you involved. And myself, I’ll try to hook up with universities and some local communities to see how far they want to be involved. I might go further to find sponsors for to send that team of 10. In any case, nothing solid is out…but it’s a start and we’ll keep moving forward. It was great 1st Idealist(Singapore) Meeting. Next one will be in mid-March and I’m trying to get a venue. Once I confirm it, I’ll register it on idealist and post more details. In the meantime, you can surf on to www.Idealist.org to sign up or you can go to www.LightForChildren.com to find out more about Sebastian’s NGO
