A recent coffee session with a friend who used his debit card to pay for our drinks made me think about my finances.

Naturally the issue of credit loan ratios came to mind. How much loan is valid? I personally feel that loans are fine so long as they're taken to obtain something that returns value higher than the loan itself. This is often where the problem lies. Most people see loans as a form of advance purchase in anticipation of their next paycheck.

I too have made that mistake. I took a personal loan more than once for things like PDAs and such only to realise later that i'd run myself into the ground if I continued doing such stuff.

Thankfully, once I realised this, it became easier to make better decisions. In fact, there's a lot to read about when it comes to the topic of bad credit repair and its tools

But in general, the rules that you should follow is this:

  1. Don't loan  more than you have to.
  2. Don't loan for luxuries
  3. Be very aware of how the interest will affect you

Remember, loans can do as much good as it can harm your lifestyle.

Yesterday was the e27 unconference and despite getting there late( I got there at 8.15 or so) the event was still one worth going for.

The main discussion I went for was “The Two Towers” facilitated by Bernard Leong and Gwendolyn Tan where they talked about whether Singapore has what it takes to go into this Web 2.0 frenzy. Everything from whether we had the programmers, whether we had the people with the right mindset to whether we should even be into Web 2.0 was discussed.

It was interesting because along the way, issues of copyright were raised. “If content were to be user generated, who will be accountable for any copyright infringements?” I personally think that people should stop fighting this change. It’s time companies see this form of ‘cutting and pasting’ of materials as a wave that they should be riding on and not opposing. How to ride it is the big question.

All in all it was a good 4th unconference but I couldn’t help but leave thinking…Singapore is doomed. We seem to be talking too much and doing too little – I don’t mean the people at the unconference, but more of the overall system. Our practices do not allow for innovation and creativity…or at least very little of it.

Maybe this is the beginning of a newer and more innovative age for Singapore…Or maybe we’re just trying too hard to catch up that we’ve forgotten that if we always want to play catch-up, we’ll never really be able to focus on being the first.

As for me…I’m beginning to feel a little bit apathetic to the development of the policies and around me and instead take on the mindset of, “If I want to do something, I’ll just find a way to get it done.”

That said…look out for “Expecting Something ” in the coming weeks….
